Gaga or Parody?

Some of Lady Gaga's videos are hard to believe that they aren't "Weird Al" style parodies but here is an original from Gaga that is an epic in the Michael Jackson Thriller tradition!!! I have included a parody version from some troops in Afghanistan as well as a Muppets version. I have to admit that all have a sufficiently high level of entertainment value to be included in the posts of the Mullet of Blogs!!!!!!!!!!

It's Earth Day!

In the spirit of photography and light, I am posting about light from human populations. Light pollution may be a serious problem in many cities, and the energy used to power our large and tiny anthills may be slowly poisoning us all, but seriously, it's all about the pretty.

This image was created by the UN from composite satellite pictures. I think this one is the real light coming from the earth, recorded with a long exposure. Satellites are moving, of course, so taking a picture with a long exposure is challenging. So some guy built a thing that compensates. Check out this website for a more scientific explanation. The sciency bit is partway down, and there are some other pictures.

It's fascinating to look at different areas of the globe and different cities and see what you can figure out from the light distribution at night.

Japan is distinctive because the country uses a light source that emits mercury vapors into the air, causing a green glow. It's pretty eerie, and clearly a sign that this phenomenon needs to be features in a Mothra remake. It's a giant moth! Clearly would be destructively attracted to lights!

Pictures of Cairo show the Nile as a distinctive black line snaking through the city.

Images of Vegas are gorgeous in part because the colored (and extreme in general) lights along the strip look like a strip of scattered jewels in the middle of the city in the middle of the desert.

I am pleased to celebrate Earth Day by celebrating how cool our planet looks from space due to our consumption of natural resources.

Lightning Pictures

Although I find the science aspect of lightning very interesting I will allow you to explore that to the extent each of you would like to. I would mostly like to share some impressive pictures and graphics. I was inspired over the weekend with the incredible pictures of lightning from the ash cloud of the Icelandic volcano that is erupting. Here is a link to a slideshow of some of those pictures as well as the one below. I will share this graphic that I found interesting as it shows the rfrequency of lightning strikes around the world. I was surprised by some of these locations and others I was not surprised about at all.

The rest are just pictures of lightning that I think are very cool!

World's Largest...

After a week-long break here at the Mullet, I will bring in some "World's Largest" topic areas for fun.

Here is a link to a site with information on some of the world's largest vehicles of various sorts. Below is one of the pictures from their list/site and it is the Knock Nevis, the largest ship in the world.

The largest animal in the world is the Blue Whale, though some Lion's Mane Jellyfish can grow to be longer they are nowhere near as massive as the Blue Whale.

The largest land animal is the African Bush Elephant. I took this picture in Botswana at Chobe National Park.

The world's largest cut diamond is the Golden Jubilee Diamond, which is 545 carats. The Cullinan I which is in the Crown Jewels collection in the Tower of London was the largest prior to the discovery of the Golden Jubilee in the 1980s. The larger rough version known as the Cullinan Diamond is the largest gem-quality diamond ever found. It was 3106 carats and when cut and polished yielded the Culinan I at 530 carats, the Cullinan II at 317 carats. The Cullinan III and Cullinan IV are 94 and 63 carats respectively!

World's Largest City? Anyone guess New York or Tokyo? The largest city, not metropolitan area is actually Shanghai, China. New York is #13 and Tokyo is #11. For metropolitan area Tokyo jumps to #1 and NY goes to #4.

BACON!!!

OK, a warning message to all vegetarians - look away now!

Bacon is the awesome topic today, in particular it is random and weird bacon items! I have a handful of these fun items that friends have given me over the last year including bacon mints, bacon bandaids and most recently bacon toothpicks.

Here are a few items from Archie McPhee's that are in their bacon line of products, and there is a location in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle.

Awesome or Not?

I am not sure but I think this may just be AWESOME, I will let you be the judge. Maybe only bits and pieces will be awesome and others just plain weird. I am not knowledgable about fashion so this is just my humble yet intrigued opinion.

Today I saw a picture of some interesting shoes that are apparently designed by Alexander McQueen and Lady Gaga wears them. Here is the picture, I like the one on the right the best, I guess. OK, more crazy shoes/boots, here we go! Of course I couldn't ignore some Gene Simmons boots from KISS. Apparently you can buy some of these or boots like these and many other types of custom boots at http://www.motorcowboy.com/product/KISS2 Anyone remember the crazy kicks that the Spice Girls wore? Here is a picture to jog your memory. Superheroes definitely get in on the action with the eccentric footwear! Superman had some interesting boots, I guess but people always focus more on the tights!Here are some Wonder Woman boots that you can even get for yourself.

AWESOME Returns

OK, since it has been a week since the last post here at the Mullet of Blogs I feel the need to re-address the mission of spreading Awesomeness! I think this can only be done properly by using fictional motivational posters. Who among you will challenge the Awesomeness of these posters here.

This second poster is from a wesite called motifake and they have some fun posters to look through. They are not all for the PC conscious though.
